Sunday Night Serenade

Okay, it’s time once again for the dulcet tones of me babbling endlessly about music… or at least you can pretend it’s me babbling until I finally gather up the cahones to actually record a podcast version and let’s be honest, that might take some time. At the very least it won’t be until I get my computer fixed (which, based on my current monetary prognostications, will hopefully happen by the end of March).

Anyways, on with the show… such as it is.

For most of the week I’ve been wracking my brain for what I should post this week and was coming up blank. I think I was trying too hard, or perhaps I just became overwhelmed with my plethora of choices and couldn’t decide — I’ve always loved that word plethora. It sounds so cool.

Err, where was I? Oh yeah.

Pikachu, I choose… No, wait. That’s not right.

Rilo Kiley… I choose you! There. That’s better.

I’m actually technically making two choices, but both are related so that’s alright. I’ve got some stuff from Rilo Kiley as well as some solo stuff from Jenny Lewis who is the lead singer of Rilo Kiley.

First the Rilo Kiley.

This was my first introduction to the group by one of my friends from work and I was pretty much hooked from the beginning. It’s catchy and the lyrics just fit. I love the line:

and the talking leads to touching,
and the touching leads leads to sex,
and then there is no mystery left.

To me it’s just one of those simple truths that becomes very eloquent when expressed lyrically. It’s from their 2004 album, More Adventurous. Some of their stuff is a little less mainstream and not what you’d hear on the radio, which is one of the many reasons they appeal to me. Now, some of you may remember that I posted another one of their videos way back last August.

Here it is again for those of you too lazy to double back. It’s from their latest release, Under the Blacklight and even six months later I still listen to it and groove to it. The whole album has a very cool vibe to it. At times it’s very Fleetwood Mac, and at times very much it’s own beast. Definitely worthwhile. And now some of Jenny Lewis’ solo work.

Again, the lyrical poignancy of “You are what you love, and not what loves you back” resonates with me.

As an added bonus, here’s a version of The Travelling Wilburys song Handle with Care that she did. Some ingenious soul has included a montage of new Doctor Who clips that are somewhat fitting so I’ll go with that rather than one of the live concert versions that are up on YouTube.

If you’re looking for some good songs, just do a search on YouTube for Rilo Kiley or Jenny Lewis and you’ll get some decent results.

Until next time, enjoy.
