Have Bike, Will Travel

Today I went for a long bike ride, partly to clear my head from the crap that has been orbiting it for the past little while but mostly because I missed the feeling of the wind in my face and the burn in my muscles. I intentionally went out of my way to take unfamiliar streets and meander down trails I’ve never been on before just to see what I could see. I am always amazed at the amount of natural beauty that hides itself in little niches and microcosms in between all the concrete, wood and steel of our cities. I guess that it is true what they say… life will find a way.

Today the sun wandered in and out from behind the clouds and it was noticeably cooler for most of the afternoon. When it did, I could sense that summer is nearing an end. There is that last minute surge of vibrancy and living that seems to permeate everything at this time of year. It’s like everything is trying to get the most out of the time they have left. The children playing in the street are more enthusiastic because soon they know they’ll have to head back to school, the trees and flowers all know that the frost will soon be here so they’re growing like mad and putting on one last vibrant show before the end. It’s an amazing time. You can feel the electricity in the air as it happens.

Soon the days will get noticeably shorter and the crisp cool air will coat the world in fog and frost heralding the oncoming winter. I can’t wait. Autumn is always one of my most favourite times of the year. It’s going to be grand.

I never did quite clear my head today, but the ride helped immensely and I brought a long a book and manged to find a comfortable little nook away from the world and spent a glorious couple of hours reading and watching the world go by. Here’s hoping there’s a few more days like this left in the year.

Stardust

Like many other initiates in the Cult of Neil, I went and saw Stardust on Friday. I’m going to try and sum up my initial impressions here but I know I’m going to have to go back and see it again to finalize my thoughts and clarify a few things. I’ll hide my review behind a cut so as not to spoil it for anyone who has yet to see it. So don’t read any further if you enjoy spoilers. See, I am a nice guy sometimes.

Lazy Eyes & Moneymakers

I’ve had a song stuck in my head all week and it has been driving me mad because I had no clue who it was by or even what the title was. It was one of those things where I got in the car, turned the radio on and caught the tail end of the song. Of course radio being radio, they just moved on to the next song and I never found out who it was by. For the past couple of days I’ve manically been doing some detective work trying to figure it out and I finally caught a break and heard it again yesterday in it’s entirety along with the artist and title. It was Lazy Eye by Silversun Pickups.

I’m quite enjoying it and it’s been on repeat on my ipod ever since I tracked down a copy. It reminds me very much of early Pumpkins, which is probably why it caught my ear to begin with. I’ve heard a couple other tunes by them and I like their stuff so far. I’ll probably go out and get the album once I’m a little better off for cash again.

Another album I definitely plan to get when I can is the new Rilo Kiley album. I just heard the first single off it and it’s not like their older stuff but I like it all the same. A little harder and funkier and there’s nothing wrong with that.

4 A.M. Channel Surfing

If you’re a regular to this site you may or may not have noticed that I’ve been changing the wordpress theme quite frequently as I fiddle with the background settings. Sometimes as often as two or three times a day. I’m just trying to find a theme that fits. Some of the themes have layout aspects I like and others just look cool. I’m still trying to find a happy medium between the two so as I can then use that particular theme as a template and modify it for my own use. I’ve decided that 3 column themes just don’t work for me. I just don’t have enough content currently to warrant the layout so I’ve at least narrowed my search down to 2-column ones. If I were a bit mor ambitious in my coding though, I’d probably strip down the stylesheet and layout of a 3 column theme as they seem to have more of what I’m looking for in that regard.

Who knows though, I still might be struck down by a flash of brilliance and end up doing that… but I doubt it. In the meantime you’ll all just have to put up with me flipping themes as if I were channel surfing at 4 in the morning and there’s nothing on.

For Your Viewing Pleasure

I was tipped off to a little gem of a tv series out of Britian recently and I must say I’m hooked. It’s a sci-fi show (of course!) and it’s called Primeval. It’s about a group of scientists investigating space-time anomolies in Britain that are linking modern day earth with it’s distant past allowing dinosaurs and other creatures to pass through into the present. It’s fun and from what I’ve seen of the first season it’s quite enjoyable. Sadly the one season consists of a total of 6 episodes which is hardly enough to whet one’s palette if you ask me (Damn Brits!). Thankfully there’s a second season in the works. Which is really good because I hate cliffhanger endings and the first season ends in a doozy. Grrrr

I’ve also started watching another British show called Life on Mars. (possible spoilers). This one is a bit different. It’s a police procedural drama with a sci-fi twist. It’s about a modern day British police officer who gets hit by a car and when he wakes up he’s back in the 1970s. It’s never made clear if he has actually travelled back in time, if he’s laying comatose in hospital dreaming it all, or if he actually is from the 70s and is just mentally unbalanced. Definitely an interesting show from the first few episodes I’ve watched. It’s worth taking a look for no other reason than the main character is played by John Simms, who recently played the latest incarnation of The Master in season three of the new Doctor Who.

Finally, I recently discovered that they’ve remade the Bionic Woman series and it’ll be coming out this fall. I’m sort of unsure about this one to be honest. I tracked down the pilot the other night just to see what it was like and it was okay, nothing stellar by any means but still an enjoyable waste of time. I was a little dissapointed in the fact that there was no classic “Da-na-na-na-na” sound effect to coincide with the Bionic use… actually I was a lot dissapointed. That was one of the classic hallmarks of both the original series and The Six Million Dollar Man. Without them it’s just a chick with cybernetic limbs fighting crime. Meh. Though to be fair I was watching an unaired version and from what I discovered doing some research they have reshot and changed some scenes so perhaps not all the sound effects were added. Here’s hoping! On the plus side Katee Sackhoff, Starbuck from Battlestar, is guest starring as a bad bionic woman so that’s kind of fun to watch.

And on that note I think I’ve blathered on enough about my recent viewing habits. Goodnight for now.
